Alfa Romeo is reported to be weighing up the option of Nico Hulkenberg to team up with new signing Valtteri Bottas for 2022.
Kimi Raikkonen has already announced his retirement from the sport, which means there were two seats up for grabs. One of them has already been occupied by Bottas, which means there is one left. Current Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi is the favourite to retain his seat, but there are a few options other than him.
According to various reports, Alfa Romeo have been linked with some names, including Nyck de Vries and F2 prospect Theo Pourchaire. There is also another name involved, and that is Hulkenberg.
Hulkenberg’s links come from the fact that he is one of the best drivers without a seat in F1 at the moment. The German also holds the card of having worked with Alfa Romeo team boss Frédéric Vasseur a long time ago. In fact, the two men have worked together during Hulkenberg’s junior career.
The rumour is that whoever the driver who partners Bottas is will only receive a one-year contract. This is in stark contrast to the Finn, who has signed a multi-year deal with Alfa Romeo.
Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo are on top of the world having landed Bottas in their ranks. The Italian outfit are buzzing at the signing, and Vasseur is excited at what he can bring to the table.
As reported by Auto Motor Und Sport, Vasseur said, “With him we have won a strong team player who brings a lot of experience from the front end of the starting grid. Valtteri was recently an important part of a team that has rewritten the record books. He can pin four constructor titles on the flags.
“Our connection goes back a long time. We have already celebrated successes together in Formula 3 and GP3. His talent has always been clearly recognizable since then. I look forward to seeing how he will soon use his skills for our team.”
