Canelo became interested in the sport at a young age after witnessing his brother Rigoberto train. He began his professional career when he was 15 years old. He won the Junior Mexican National Boxing Championships in 2005 and the Junior Mexican National Championships in 2004.

Canelo had his first professional fight with Abraham Gonzalez. He won the fight against Gonzalez via TKO in the fourth round of the match. The fighter has not looked back since then. He currently holds 11 major titles.

Canelo tasted his only defeat with Floyd Mayweather in a highly anticipated fight back in the year 2013. He holds a record of two draws against Jorge Juarez and Gennady Golovkin respectively.
