Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz had a spectacular race during the Monaco Grand Prix as he earned a second-place podium finish. This was his first podium with Ferrari.

Despite his amazing result, Sainz was left with mixed feelings after the race.

His main regret was the fact that he had to abandon his attempt for the fastest time during the qualifying session after his teammate crashed his car.

Could have earned pole: Sainz

Sainz was confident that he would have earned a pole finish and even gone on to win the race.

While he did clock a great result, it is still too soon for Ferrari to compete with Mercedes and Red Bull.

“It doesn’t mean we can fight for pole or the podium with Mercedes and Red Bull now,” Sainz revealed while talking to the Spanish branch of Motorsport.com.

“I think they are still ahead of us. This weekend is a bit hard to digest because you don’t know when the next opportunity will present itself, but we are proud of the progress we have made.”

Circuits like Monaco offer advantage

Sainz has his eyes set on the next Grand Prix where he can earn a podium finish. However, he thinks that this can only be done on certain circuits.

“The answer is simple: look at which circuit is most like Monaco. There aren’t many, probably not even the circuits you think of,” said the Spaniard.

He goes on to say that there are opportunities for Ferrari in Hungary.
