Carlos Sainz talks about competing against McLaren – “One of the hardest cars to overtake”

McLaren and Ferrari have been locked in battle right from the start of the season; hidden behind the rivalry of Red Bull and Mercedes.

McLaren is currently 15 points ahead of rivals Ferrari and the reds have been trying to counter them as the races go by.

The battle is somewhat extra special for Carlos Sainz.

This comes after he drove for McLaren last year and then joined Ferrari for the current season.

What did Sainz say?

So far, Sainz has managed to score more points than his McLaren successor Daniel Ricciardo. Still, he knows that the battle with McLaren is still difficult.

“Unfortunately it has happened to me a few times now that I am stuck behind a McLaren and am not able to pass it,” Sainz said.

“It’s not news, they have a very high speed on the straights and a lot of power coming out of corners. It’s probably one of the most difficult cars to overtake,” he added.

Sainz vs Ricciardo

During the British Grand Prix, Sainz had a difficult time battling Ricciardo. This along with a failed pitstop cost the Ferrari driver precious points.

“First on the medium [tyre] and then we actually managed to outstrip him with a very strong pace, but unfortunately after the slow pitstop, I had to drive behind him again,” he stated.

“On the hard tyre it was even harder to overtake him.

“It just felt like that hard tyre at high speed couldn’t handle the load of the dirty air and I was understeering a lot more, so I couldn’t keep up with him,” he concluded.

With the upcoming race in Hungary, the Ferrari driver will be looking to redeem himself.
