With Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes coming to an agreement as far as his contract is concerned, many believe he will quit at the end of the year.
The fact that Hamilton chose to sign just a one-year deal has led to speculation surrounding his long-term future.
Hamilton will start as favourite to win a record eighth Formula 1 world championship this season. He is currently tied on seven with the legendary Michael Schumacher.
Christijan Albers, a former F1 driver, said that there is no way Hamilton would quit the sport so soon.
“You can see that he often goes to America to hang out with the stars. He wants to maintain that lifestyle, so he will definitely continue in Formula 1.
“If I left the sport, I think I would end up in a ‘black hole’ pretty quickly,” Albers said.
Albers went on to say that Hamilton is still the best on the grid and has all the abilities to keep on winning.
“Lewis won’t stop for now, he’s still in his element. Sometimes he talks about how he might retire, but he really enjoys the sport. He really likes the show and wants to level up.
“I don’t really see him stopping, not even next year. He feels at home in this world, where he also deals with the best artists in the world,” he said.
Hamilton is set to assess his options at the end of this year. His dad Anthony had recently made a statement that led many to believe his son was about to call time on his career. However, as noted by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, Hamilton is a big asset to the sport.
Only time will tell if Hamilton does indeed remain in the sport beyond the 2021 season.
