Bottas reveals why he turned down Williams offer after Mercedes sack – “It was either them or Alfa Romeo”

New Alfa Romeo signing Valtteri Bottas revealed the reason for refusing a Williams return in 2022, saying he liked the Alfa Romeo project more.

Bottas began his F1 career at Williams in 2013. He had his breakout season at the team, with his string of impressive performances earning him a move to Mercedes.

Five years later, he leaves Mercedes for Alfa Romeo. He had an offer for a homecoming, but he chose unfamiliar territory instead.

Bottas revealed the reason for refusing a Williams return in 2022, saying that he wanted a fresh project.

“It was not (an) easy decision,” the Finn said, as quoted by formula1news.co.uk.

“I tried to take as much information as I could from both sides, and at the same time, listen to my gut feeling.”

Both good, but…

The 32-year-old driver explained that while he was happy for Williams making progress and having a solid projects, he was happier with Alfa Romeo’s offer and package.

“Just based on the decision, on information that I had, (it was) not easy,” he continued.

“I really feel like Williams is on the upside now. I think they have a good future.

“But somehow I had a feeling that Alfa was the right thing for me. Yes, there was… there was an option (to return to Williams). For me I think, realistically, for long-term at that point, with not so many options, it was either Williams or Alfa Romeo.”

Bottas spent five years at Mercedes, and will bring his winning experience to Alfa Romeo. He is a 10-time race winner, and a key cog of Mercedes’ Constructors’ Championship-winning juggernaut for the five years he was there.
