New signing Valtteri Bottas revealed that he was targeting a win with Alfa Romeo, saying the new regulations have given his team an opportunity.
Bottas departed Mercedes after a five-year spell with the team. He was very successful with the German outfit, and although he never won a world title with them, he did win ten races in that time.
The Finn’s latest victory came at the 2021 Turkish GP, where he took a commanding lead and win. Such performances led to Alfa Romeo going all-in for his signature, something that will face the acid test starting from 2022.
As a result, Bottas revealed that he was targeting a win with Alfa Romeo, saying he was not ruling the possibility of it out.
Speaking to GPFans, he said, “I feel like that’s the beauty of these new regulations, and the budget cap, and everything, that I feel like anything is possible.
“I definitely feel like Alfa Romeo, it should be higher up than it is now, at least from what I’ve seen at the factory and the people, the motivation and everything.”
Clean slate
“That’s the beauty of the new regs, you just don’t know, so it’s quite hard to accept,” he continued.
“For sure, I’m realistic. I don’t think we’re going to be consistently fighting for the wins next year, like (we did) with Mercedes, but consistently being in the points in the first year with the team, I think that is possible.
“There are so many variables and so many things that will eventually affect how it’s going to be.”
Bottas will be paired with Guanyu Zhou at Alfa Romeo, and will look to lay a marker on the rest of the grid.
