British broadcaster berates Lewis Hamilton’s ‘virtue signalling’ amidst Prince Harry and Meghan Markle comparisons

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, who had received his knighthood at Windsor Castle, has faced criticism by the British media where he was compared to estranged royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

British broadcaster GB News recently likened the actions of Hamilton with those of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on live broadcast.

Broadcaster Emily Carver drew parallels between the two by claiming that Hamilton was doing “exactly what people despise about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry”.

The seven-time world champion was targeted by Carver mainly based on what she saw as “virtue-signalling” on his part.

In the rant, she claimed that Hamilton almost seemed to come out in support of Just Stop Oil, a British environmental activist group that looks to urge the government to end its fossil fuel licensing and production.

While this part was not problematic in her opinion, it was the fact that Hamilton’s racing kit is full of petrol and gas related sponsors which makes his stance hypocritical.

You may wonder what this has to do with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The duo also campaigned and spoke frequently about environmental protection but were chastised for “flying around the world in a private jet” which seemed to negate all the things they were saying on a public forum.

Hamilton, of course, has no control over which sponsors Mercedes ties up with and in that sense, this rant seems a little over the top.

We are still keen to hear your thoughts on the matter. Was Carver right in criticising Hamilton? Let us know in the comments.
