Capito explains impact of Albon’s arrival – “Latifi got a motivational boost”

Williams team principal Jost Capito explained the impact of new signing Alex Albon’s arrival, saying that his teammate Nicholas Latifi is excited to race alongside him.

Williams signed Albon from Red Bull to replace the departing George Russell. The Thai driver will race alongside Latifi in 2022, bringing about a new era for the team.

Albon and Latifi go back a long way. The pair were teammates at DAMS, taking five wins between themselves. Now they have been reunited under Williams, and their team principal s excited to see what their chemistry will bring to the team.

Capito explained the impact of Albon’s arrival, saying that it would be a source of immense motivation for Latifi.

“They have been team-mates in ’18 in (GP2) and they appreciate each other very well,” he said in an interview with GPFans.

“Nicky was extremely happy when he got to know that Alex will join the team. I think that gave him even the motivational boost that he can race again with Alex.”

Redemption arc

Albon spent a year on the sidelines as Red Bull’s reserve driver. He didn’t have a seat in 2021, but his talent was scouted by Williams, who went all out to sign him.

“(It is) the same with Alex,” Capito said.

“He was really happy to be in the same team with Nicky and I’m sure the relationship between them will be as good as it was with George and Nicky, and you know that Alex and George are personally very good friends as well.

“That also means they have a very similar character, and I believe this kind of character and behaviour fits extremely well to Williams where Williams is right now.”
