Former racing driver Anthony Davidson made a list of the top five drivers this season, with it having the usual suspects but some glaring omissions.
The 2021 season saw two drivers in Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen fight it out for the world championship. They were leagues above the rest of the grid, with the latter taking the top prize.
The best of the rest saw Valtteri Bottas, Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc in the standings in that order. All of them had good seasons, though not as great ones as HAM-VER.
Davidson made a list of the top five drivers of the season, and it may surprise a few fans.
Speaking to Motorsport.com in the Netherlands, he said, “It’s always difficult to judge because the equipment you drive has a huge influence in this sport.
“But if you are talking about the best five drivers, then of course Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are among them, and I would also put Charles Leclerc among the best.
“If you then mention Carlos Sainz, you already have four. And then we have Lando Norris. That makes five.”
There’s a lot to agree about this list. However, if Davidson has put Sainz, Leclerc and Norris above drivers like Bottas and Perez who finished above them, it only leads to debate.
While each opinion is subjective, there are cases to be made for the both of them. Some fans would even clamour for the inclusion of Fernando Alonso, Daniel Ricciardo, Sebastian Vettel and even George Russell.
However, one thing that cannot be disputed is Hamilton and Verstappen sitting at the top of any list anyone could possibly make.
