Mercedes FE driver Nyck de Vries revealed he was annoyed with fans comparing Formula E to F1, saying it was doing a disservice to the former.
De Vries drives for Mercedes in Formula E, and is the reigning Formula E champion. He is also a reserve driver for Mercedes-AMG F1 team, and is being tipped for a seat with the team should there be a vacancy.
Formula E has many former F1 drivers racing in it, drawing many fans to it. Said viewers have also started discussing the similarities and differences between the two sports, something the Dutchman is not pleased about.
De Vries revealed he was annoyed with fans comparing Formula E to F1, saying it was disrespectful to the sport he was part of.
“Basically, Formula E has established itself as a racing series. It is accepted and appreciated in our motorsport scene,” de Vries told German website Auto Motor und Sport.
“However, many people still compare it with Formula 1, which in my opinion does not do it justice.”
Apples and oranges
“For me, they are different championships with very different requirements,” de Vries explained. “We should rather see Formula E as a championship in its own right.
“I’m happy to be a part of it and to be able to fight for victories – after all, that’s why I became a racing driver.”
Should he sign for F1, he will be the second driver from the Netherlands to drive in F1 after Max Verstappen. The rumours are always floating around, and he will get his opportunity sooner or later.
Until then, he will look to defend his championship in Formula E and establish himself as an elite driver.
