According to reports, multiple drivers have been reported to have “lost faith” in F1 Race Director Michael Masi after the 2021 season.

The 2021 season had everything for all kinds of fans. However, one thing it didn’t have was a fair and legal end, with its conclusion leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.

Max Verstappen won the world championship in highly controversial fashion thanks to Masi making a terrible interpretation of the Safety Car rules. It ended up affecting race leader Lewis Hamilton, who was set to take the win and the championship had the Australian not played foul.

According to reports, after what happened at Abu Dhabi, multiple drivers have been reported to have “lost faith” in Masi and his leadership of Race Control.

According to Motorsport-Total.com, it wasn’t just Abu Dhabi that led to such a stance, but the general inconsistency regarding decisions throughout the season.

What’s right and what’s wrong?

“For example,” the report reads, “the reaction to the Turn 4 battle between Hamilton and Verstappen in Brazil left some drivers confused as to what is and isn’t allowed in wheel-to-wheel duels on the track.

“The handling of the incidents in Saudi Arabia also caused a lot of criticism of the race management.”

Although these drivers have only expressed their dissatisfaction with Masi and Race Control, Mercedes apparently want his head. The German team have sent a list of demands to the FIA after the Hamilton debacle, with one of them explicitly saying Masi should be removed from his position.

With Masi not commenting anything on the matter, the future of the Race Director is still a doubt. The FIA has opened an investigation into the entire fiasco, and its results will come before the start of the new season.
