Ecclestone explains why ‘everyone’ wants Verstappen to beat Hamilton and claim championship

Bernie Ecclestone made a claim regarding the world championship, saying that everyone he knows is rooting for a new winner.

The championship race this season is being contested by Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. One is yet to win his first title, while the other has been the man seven times.

It is thus a battle of two eras, and even as of this moment, we do not know who will come out on top. Such has been the intensity of the rivalry that whoever comes out on top is fully deserving of the title.

Nevertheless, Ecclestone made a claim regarding the world championship, and said that he prefers Verstappen taking the win.

“I hope I won’t lose my money,” the 91-year-old said after revealing he bet on Verstappen, as quoted by grandprix.com.

When asked who else thinks the Dutchman will pip his English counterpart to the title, the former F1 supremo said, “Everyone I speak to.

“Nobody says Lewis is not doing his job well enough. He’s a top, top driver who has done a great job, and Mercedes is a great team making the best cars ever.

“Would other drivers do just as well in a car like that? Many of them think they could and perhaps there are a couple of young drivers who could. But we don’t know the exact answer to that question.”

Why you do this?

When asked if a Hamilton win would see him eclipse the great Michael Schumacher, Ecclestone answered in the negative, and revealed that he thought Hamilton would retire after matching the seven-time champion.

“No, not at all,” he insisted.

“In fact, I’m surprised Lewis didn’t say at the beginning of the year ‘I’m retiring – I don’t want to win more races or world championships than Michael’,” he concluded.
