Lewis Hamilton informs Mercedes of his decision to stay for the 2022 season

According to Motorsport.com Italia, Lewis Hamilton has informed Mercedes of his decision to stay in F1 and with the team.

Hamilton’s future was subjected to massive speculation following the controversial events of the Abu Dhabi GP. He was on course to becoming an eight-time world champion, but a contentious decision from those in charge of the race snatched it away from him.

The incident was panned by fans, who stood with the seven-time world champion and called the entire thing a robbery. However, Hamilton stayed silent on the matter, declining to speak about the incident on social media and the like.

With no word from the driver and Mercedes’ growing concerns regarding how disillusioned he was regarding the whole situation, the retirement rumours started to heat up.

The traction of the rumour increased when Mercedes reportedly shortlisted two drivers to take his place in the event that he pulls out of F1.

Even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff’s comments did not help things. After the race, he had said, “I would very much hope Lewis continues racing because he is the greatest driver of all time.”

Here to stay

However, it has been reported that Hamilton has informed Mercedes of his decision to stay in F1 and compete next season.

Such a move would see the British Knight honour his contract and race until it expires. Should he continue in the sport, he will race alongside fellow countryman George Russell at Mercedes, and try to win his eighth world title and Mercedes’ ninth consecutive Constructors’ Championship.

A fired-up and motivated Hamilton can be expected on the grid in 2022. He will want to set the injustice of 2021 right, and may be looking to steamroll the field like years past en route to more success.
