Herbert suggests Masi will get fired – “He has done too much damage to F1”

Former F1 racer Johnny Herbert suggested that Race Director Michael Masi would get fired for his actions at the Abu Dhabi GP.

The 2021 season had everything a fan could possibly ask for. The most amazing aspect of it was a title battle that went all the way to the season finale in Abu Dhabi. However, the outcome of the race was determined in the FIA’s room more than it was on track.

Masi made a bizarre call on the last lap of the race and broke the rules in the process. The decision ended up influencing the outcome of the championship result itself, sending fans into hysterics.

With the Australian facing severe flak for what he did, Herbert suggested that Masi would get fired for his actions at Yas Marina.

Asked by Sky F1 if the Race Director could find himself in charge for 2022, Herbert said, “In many respects…and in all respects, no.

“Because I think he has done too much damage to Formula 1 and I think because of the position that he’s in, we have got to have trust. And I think that trust has completely and utterly evaporated.”

Big questions

“The problem is, is who do you replace him with? Because obviously experience is going to be very, very important for the man who slots into that position,” he continued.

“Michael was very fortunate, he was sort of underneath Charlie Whiting (former F1 race director) when Charlie was the head of it and he learnt a lot of good things from that point of view.

“Is there anybody that sort of stands out for me at the moment to replace him? No. And that is the conundrum.”
