Leclerc believes there is still plenty left for Ferrari to do before challenging for championship

Charles Leclerc has provided a contrasting opinion to that of Mattia Binotto, saying that there is still lots of work to be done before Ferrari becomes a title contender.

Binotto has hyped up the new Ferrari engine, saying that it would propel Ferrari back to the top. Ferrari has improved since their horror 2020 season, and are currently vying for third place. Their next aim is to go one better.

Leclerc had a go in their new engine at the Russian GP. The Ferrari driver has already crossed his shambolic 2020 points tally after the Italian GP. However, Leclerc provided a contrasting opinion to that of Binotto, saying that there is still lots of work to be done before Ferrari rises back to the top.

“Already from the first race, I felt more confident with this car,” Leclerc said, as quoted by GP Fans.

“The performance overall has just been better, and we have also been more consistent compared to last year, so it is good to see that. It shows we are working in the right direction.

“The road is still very long until we reach our objectives, which is to fight again for the title, but it has been a good step forward from last year and now we need to continue working in this direction.”

Bronze medal battle

Leclerc also commented on the rivalry with McLaren, saying that the two teams have been evenly matched throughout the season.

“They are having a very good season unfortunately, but it is good that we have such a fight,” Leclerc said.

“We have been very, very close during the whole season. In Monza, they were very strong and we will try to catch up now.

“Obviously, they are very quick, very consistent also, so now it is our job to try and maximise every weekend, and hopefully we can get back in front of them at the end of the championship.”
