Marko suggests Leclerc is overrated – “Not the wonder boy many thought he was”

Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko suggested that Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was overrated, and proceeded to rate his teammate Carlos Sainz above him.

Leclerc was beaten by a teammate for the first time in his F1 career. He was leading Sainz throughout the season, but conceded P5 in the Drivers’ Championship to the Spaniard on the last race of the season.

The result meant Sainz was the best of the rest on the grid, and had a better season than his Monegasque counterpart. The thing that made it sweeter was that it was his very first season with Ferrari.

After the season concluded, Marko suggested that Leclerc was overrated before heaping praise on his teammate.

As quoted by express.co.uk, the Austrian told Auto Bild, “Carlos is a very good driver, that he left Red Bull was not because of his performance.

“In any case, he has shown that Leclerc is probably not the wonder boy that many thought he was.

“The new regulations make it difficult to make predictions for this season. But if Ferrari makes a big impact with the new car, Carlos can definitely compete for the title.”

Progress made

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto remained optimistic about his team’s chances for 2022, saying that all the progress of 2021 would be put to use.

“I think we’ve made a big step in the Power Unit,” he said.

“Because if you compare it to the past, last year (2020) the Power Unit was our big weakness, and we were a long way behind. If you look at where we are today, then the developments are obvious.

“The fact that we managed to do this eight races before the end was a great achievement by the team, which felt the responsibility and tried to work as hard as it could and introduce the engine as early as possible.

“I’m pretty sure that we can make further improvements. What I can say about the Power Unit of 2022 is: believe me, there is a lot of innovation in it,” he concluded.
