Felipe Massa talked about Lewis Hamilton’s Abu Dhabi heartbreak, saying that it was similar to what he suffered in 2008.
Hamilton lost his record-breaking eighth world title on the last lap of the Abu Dhabi GP. He was heartbroken after the defeat, but it wasn’t the first time a championship was snatched away on the last lap.
Ironically, in 2008, it was Hamilton who did the snatching. Back then, he was contesting a title battle with Massa. The Brazilian and the Englishman had a championship battle that went down to the final race, and the former lost in heartbreaking fashion.
Massa thought he had the championship when he crossed the line in P1 and P5-needing Hamilton was running in sixth. However, he took the place on the last lap with rain coming to his aid, seizing the championship from his rival at the last possible moment.
Massa talked about Hamilton’s Abu Dhabi heartbreak, saying that it was similar to the one he suffered in 2008.
“I can imagine how he feels,” the 40-year-old told the Dutch edition of Motorsport.com regarding Hamilton’s defeat.
“Of course it’s very similar to what I went through in 2008. I think this is what Hamilton is going through at the moment.”
Super Max
Massa also hailed 2021 World Champion Max Verstappen, saying that love him or hate him, he is an absolutely brilliant driver who can get the best pace out of any car.
“He has had a great year,” the 11-time F1 race winner said.
“You can say what you like about it, but he is the one with the most wins this season. On the last lap, he saw his chance and went for it. Not bad timing.
“Otherwise he fought like he is and that is aggressive. He deserves the championship.”
