Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s mother has accused his teammate Sergio Perez of cheating on his wife, according to reports.
Sophie Kumpen discussed this incident on an Instagram post which she quickly deleted.
This is yet another unexpected turn in the entire Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez internal bust-up after the Dutchman turned down team orders to allow Perez through during the final lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
With Verstappen already having wrapped up his second successive world championship, the points were far more crucial for Perez, who is chasing second spot in the drivers’ standings and is currently tied with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Perez had obeyed Red Bull’s command to allow Verstappen through during the Spanish Grand Prix a few months back and the Mexican expected the favour to be returned to him, especially with Verstappen not in dire need of the points himself.
Following the incident, Perez called Verstappen’s behaviour “disappointing”, but the team has since then said that it “accepts” Max’s stance on the matter.
“It shows who he [Verstappen] really is. I have nothing to say, really. After all I’ve done for him, it’s disappointing. I have no idea. I’m really surprised,” Perez said.
What did Max’s mother say?
Max’s mother Kumpen was quick to turn to social media to vent her frustration against Perez, which was clearly an ill-advised plan as she quickly took it down.
She claimed that Perez was cheating on his wife, Carola Martinez.
“And then in the evening cheating on his wife,” she allegedly wrote.
Kumpen is followed by more than 100,000 followers on Instagram.
While she didn’t reveal any names in her Instagram post, it is possible that she is referring to Perez’s scandal in the summer.
Following his Monaco Grand Prix victory, photos were leaked of Perez dancing on a yacht with plenty of women, especially one who was seen getting very close to him and was not his wife.
Following the incident, Perez had issued a public apology to his wife.
“I have seen the videos that have been circulating about me and I take responsibility for it,” he wrote.
“It was a bad party that I didn’t know how to control at the height of the person that I am, but it was just that, a very bad party. People close to me know my values and the type of person that I am.
“For those who ask me, we are more united than ever, me and my wife. And for those who just want to hurt us, I wish you the best.
“Thank you all for your love and I apologise to all the people who love me because those videos don’t represent me, not at all.
“We will not talk about this topic anymore, which only makes us forget the great moment we are living as a family.”
Perez and Martinez have been married since 2018 and have three children together.
Internal solution for Red Bull
Regarding his situation with Verstappen, Perez said that the matter would be treated internally by the team.
“What a day yesterday… A safe podium with a lack of pace made everything complicated for us with the SC. Now to focus on Abudhabi,” he tweeted.
“With Max and the team everything was discussed yesterday and it will remain internally, this is behind us and we will continue working as the great team that we have been until now.”
Since then, Verstappen has also said that he will try to help Perez if an opportunity arises in Abu Dhabi.
“If there’s a chance to help him in Abu Dhabi, then I will be there, and I will of course support him,” he said.
