Max Verstappen wins the world championship in dramatic fashion

Max Verstappen is your world champion in 2021, although there is probably a huge asterisk next to it.

The controversy ironically did not stem from Verstappen, who drove a clean and great race in Abu Dhabi. Neither did it come from his championship rival Lewis Hamilton, who many felt were robbed of an eighth world title.

The FIA decided to play the joker from their hand on the final lap, suddenly instructing the lapped cars to unlap themselves. Suddenly, Verstappen was behind Hamilton without a gap on fresh softs, and what happened next was inevitable.

The Dutchman rounded the final corner and crossed the line ahead of Hamilton, having overtaken him a few turns prior. The seven-time champion with his back to the wall gave it everything, including a near return overtake on his younger counterpart.

However, it was Super Max who won the race, taking his first world championship in the process. It was a historic day for him and his team, and while he thoroughly deserves the championship, there is a huge question mark looming over the FIA.

Elsewhere, Carlos Sainz took a stunning P3, joining the two championship protagonists on the podium. The result meant he took P5 in the Drivers’ Championship, leapfrogging Lando Norris and his own teammate Charles Leclerc on the last day.

Yuki Tsunoda took a staggering P4 with his teammate behind him, while Valtteri Bottas, Norris, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon and Leclerc rounded out the top 10. Despite Verstappen’s victory, Mercedes took the Constructors’ Championship for an eighth consecutive time.
