Lando Norris has issued a warning to Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, saying if it comes to it, he will never let them pass.
Norris sits in fourth place in the WDC, with seven races remaining in the schedule. The McLaren driver was at one point the best of the rest, behind title rivals Hamilton and Verstappen. That was a huge achievement given that he was ahead of the other Mercedes and Red Bull driver.
Although he dropped a place since then, he is still very much in the running for third place. The young Englishman wants that place to achieve his career-best finish.
As such, Norris issued a warning to Hamilton and Verstappen, saying if it comes to it, he will not let them pass in a race just to appease their title battle.
In an interview with Motorsport.com, Norris said, “Especially compared to (Valtteri) Bottas and (Sergio) Perez, a lot of the season I’m already ahead of those two in the championship.
“When you’re up against someone in a Mercedes, you don’t assume you can compete with them. The same goes for someone in a Red Bull because realistically we don’t have that good of a car yet.
“It shows that we have had a very good season so far. Even in a slightly slower car, we’ve really got the maximum potential out of it. I didn’t expect to be fourth in the championship. I think I still have a chance to finish third, so that is definitely the goal for the end of the season.”
Norris said that he doesn’t care about the title rivalry between Hamilton and Verstappen, and said that he is in F1 only for himself.
“It doesn’t matter to me that they are fighting for the championship,” Norris said.
“I drive for myself, and if I can win a race, I certainly won’t let up, and I’m not going to give that chance to anyone else, that’s part of the game. I would never let them pass.”
