Former world champion Alain Prost made a shocking Lewis Hamilton claim, saying that the seven-time world champion could be done with the sport.
Hamilton was left heartbroken by what transpired at the final race of 2021. Having looked set to capture a record-breaking eighth world title, a highly controversial call saw him race with one hand behind his back and surrender his lead to his championship rival on the last lap of the race.
Following the defeat, the British Knight has not made a public appearance, nor has he said anything about the upcoming season. Many speculated he might have raced his last Grand Prix having been disillusioned by the travesty that occurred at Yas Marina.
Joining this group, Prost made a shocking Hamilton claim, saying that he had every reason to hang up his helmet and draw the curtains on his legendary career.
As quoted by TheJudge13, in an interview with French publication ‘Le Journal Du Dimanche’, Prost spoke about the Mercedes driver, saying, “It’s difficult to put yourself in his shoes.
“He surely has as many reasons to stop as to continue. He’s taken a big blow to the head and he could be finished, but it would be really sad if he wasn’t here this season.
“I want to stay optimistic because there’s this eighth title to go and this new technical regulation, with maybe three teams on point and four or five drivers vying for the title. It’s a challenge that Hamilton might want to take on.”
Hammer time
With Hamilton under contract with Mercedes until 2023, there is every chance he returns next season to right the wrong he was forced into.
Currently sitting level with the great Michael Schumacher on world titles won, the British driver may well and truly be back with a vengeance in 2022.
