Ralf Schumacher thinks that Max Verstappen will lose the title race this season, saying that there is no way he can win.
Verstappen holds an eight-point lead with two races to go. He has not been able to win the last two races, with title rival Lewis Hamilton discovering an extra dose of pace.
The Dutchman hasn’t been able to match said pace, and has been a passenger in Brazil and Qatar. With Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi coming up, it is looking dire for him given they are Mercedes tracks.
Should Hamilton win the next two, he will become a record-breaking eight-time champion. Ralf thinks Verstappen will lose the title race this season, and dismissed his chances on paper.
“The Mercedes is currently the more stable package,” Schumacher told Sky Sport Germany, as quoted by Racingnews365.com.
Michael Schumacher’s relative insisted that it wasn’t a knock on the Red Bull driver’s talent, but just Hamilton’s talent plus package being better.
“Max gives everything and shows how good he is. Under normal circumstances, though, he doesn’t stand a chance.”
Wanted – Lady Luck
Ralf pointed out that luck plays a huge role in any driver winning a championship, and said that Verstappen will be no different. The driver has had more moments he will rue in the future, like Baku, Hungary, Silverstone and Monza.
The former F1 driver insisted that he will need every ounce of good luck at Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi if he is to clinch the world title, and said that had he had less of the bad kind, he would have been world champion already.
“Maybe he has the luck he has lacked so far,” he added.
“If he had this (luck) at the beginning of the season, he might already be World Champion now.”
