Red Bull revealed the reason for re-signing Sergio Perez, saying that he would do better with career security.
Perez signed for Red Bull last winter from Racing Point in a stunning last-minute transfer. He has since played an important role in the team’s bid for both championships.
However, there has always been a worry regarding Checo, and that is how well he can function as a number two. He started the current season slowly, but has done well in the last few races.
The Mexican has always been one of the less fortunate drivers on the grid. It took him many years to get his big break, and indeed his first win.
Red Bull revealed the real reason why they re-signed Perez, stating that it was to make him feel comfortable.
“We sat down during the summer break and realised that we would get a better Checo if we gave him security,” team boss Christian Horner said, as quoted by grandpx.news.
“The second half of the season proves us right. Checo has become much better.”
Turn it to the Max
Horner then compared Perez to Red Bull benchmark Max Verstappen, and said that he was the standard Perez needed to aim at.
“Max wins all his time in the slow and medium-speed corners,” he continued.
“Sometimes it’s up to two tenths in one corner alone. The rear of our cars has always been nervous under braking, but Max doesn’t mind. Everyone else does. They lose confidence.
“Maybe Max doesn’t even notice this nervousness in the car and just drives straight through it.”
Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko added, “Max is fast in any car. Put him in something and he is on the limit in the second lap.
The 78-year-old Austrian then talked about Pete and how car setups and necessary for him. “Then it takes him longer to adapt,” said Marko.
