Daniel Ricciardo is set to drive a NASCAR stock car in Austin this weekend.
The Australian driver will strap himself to Dale Earnhardt Sr’s legendary 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. This drive was offered to him by his team’s CEO, Zak Brown.
Brown had made a deal with Ricciardo that if he achieves a podium this season, he would be given the opportunity. Ricciardo did one better, and his first podium this season was a huge win at the Italian GP.
Ricciardo is thus set to drive the NASCAR vehicle, and revealed his excitement to get behind the wheel of the illustrious machine.
“Dale Earnhardt – big hero of mine – and to have a chance to get behind the wheel of one of his cars is crazy. That will certainly be a ‘pinch me’ moment,” Ricciardo said, as quoted by FormulaNerds.
“I’m like, maybe he gives me the car? I think it was always a podium, I get to drive it. We (Ricciardo and Brown) never talked about a win, so I gave him my shoe that he drank out of, so maybe he gives me the car. It’s a good trade.”
Ricciardo will take the dark blue and yellow car to COTA and entertain the fans there. He also has a race coming up soon after, and gave his thoughts on the same.
“The city of Austin is a special place known for its brisket, BBQ and all that good stuff,” the Honey Badger continued.
“Not to mention that COTA is arguably one of the best tracks we get to race on. We need to make up for missing out on being there last year, so we’ll be working hard for a good result.
“We’ve taken the time between races to analyse, understand and learn from what happened last time out. We’re ready to move on and focus on the challenge of this weekend.
“I think some sections of the track will suit us, so we should be in the mix for some points come Sunday,” he concluded.
