Nico Rosberg revealed that he was “surprised” Red Bull has not promoted Pierre Gasly back to the main team.
Gasly was unceremoniously demoted by Red Bull with only half a season under his belt. It was the lowest of lows for the Frenchman, who even though was not the best did not deserve such treatment.
However, what followed in the years after that is enough to make a grown man cry. Gasly got his redemption arc at AlphaTauri, and has become one of the best drivers on the grid. He took a staggering win at the 2020 Italian GP as the amazing icing on the proverbial cake.
As a result, Rosberg revealed that he was “surprised” Red Bull have not promoted Pierre Gasly back to the main team.
“Pierre is really, really awesome, to the extent where you are surprised they don’t take him back into the mother team, into Red Bull Racing,” he told Sky F1, as quoted by FormulaSpy.
“But you will never know if he’s able to perform under the pressure of Red Bull Racing. That’s the big question mark which is left, and that’s why they didn’t put him back in. But at AlphaTauri he’s doing a really phenomenal job.”
Ambitions for the ambitious
Gasly revealed that he is ready to take the step again, but insisted that it may not be Red Bull he makes the move to.
“I think it’s clearly a key move,” he said.
“We will have to see what the view of Red Bull is over the next two years, because now it’s been eight years I’ve been with them. It’s a long time.
“Obviously, at the moment they have a very competitive car. I need to see what they do with Max (Verstappen) and how they will move forward, but obviously I need to think also about my career.
“That’s why it’s important for me to show that if there is a free seat, I should be the obvious choice. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
