An old video of Michael Schumacher, used in the Netflix move ‘Schumacher’ has thrown light on the haunting thoughts in the driver’s mind after Ayrton Senna’s death.
Schumacher made his debut when he was 22 years old. He was thrust into a grid that contained many top names, including the great Senna. During the 1994 season, Senna crashed at Imola, bringing one of the greatest careers in the sport to a terrifying conclusion. Senna crashed in horrific fashion and passed away due to injuries.
On Netflix’s documentary titled ‘Schumacher’, there was a segment where Schumacher explained how he felt after the Brazilian’s crash. He revealed the haunting thoughts in his mind after Ayrton Senna’s death.
“In Silverstone, I went there, and you suddenly saw many things with different eyes,” Schumacher said in the movie, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“I went in a road car in Silverstone through the circuit and I just thought, ‘This is a point you could be dead, this is a point you could be dead.’
“I thought it’s crazy. You always test it, you always raced here. But there’s so many points you could crash and you can be immediately dead. That’s the only thing I was thinking of,” the German concluded.
The Marino GP will forever live in the memories of F1 fans, and that’s because of the tragedy that happened. Senna died in a horrifying crash, with the three-time world champion succumbing to his injuries.
The German bagged 92 points that season, having won eight times and finished P2 twice. He beat rival Damon Hill from Williams by a solitary point to win his first ever world title that season. It was only onwards and upwards from then on, as Schumacher went on to win six more world championships before announcing his retirement from the sport.
