McLaren is reportedly considering its options to replace Daniel Ricciardo, who has clearly failed to make an impact and may even decide to quit the sport after this season.
Things have gone from bad to worse for Ricciardo despite great fanfare surrounding his move from Renault to McLaren last year.
While Ricciardo was able to record his first Grand Prix win at the Italian Grand Prix since 2018, he has not been consistent enough and has cut a frustrated figure for long spells.
Ricciardo has been shown up by the younger Lando Norris pretty much throughout his spell at the team.
Last year may well have been seen as one where Ricciardo was finding his feet at his new team and he entered this campaign himself admitting that performances were not up to scratch.
This season, McLaren has suffered problems of its own, but Ricciardo’s result output of finishing in the points on just three occasions out of nine races sees him in 12th spot in the drivers’ standings.
McLaren boss Zak Brown recently spoke about how the car has hindered Ricciardo’s performances.
“I don’t want to get into the contract [details],” Brown said.
“But there are mechanisms in which we are committed to each other and then there are mechanisms in which we are not.
“I’ve spoken with Daniel about it. We are not getting the results we both hoped for, but we will both continue to push.”
Vettel headlines McLaren wish list
According to the reputed BBC, Aston Martin driver Sebastian Vettel is being eyed by McLaren to replace Ricciardo.
Interestingly, Vettel will be out of contract at Aston Martin at the end of the season.
However, his own future in the sport has been up for plenty of debate.
He still headlines the list of three potential candidates McLaren is looking at to give Lando Norris competition and enable greater results for the team.
Meanwhile, Williams driver Alex Albon is also named as a ‘possibility’ after his impressive return to the sport.
The final name on the list is IndyCar driver Colton Herta, who has a test drive for McLaren this week. as confirmed by Andreas Seidl.
If indeed McLaren does decide to sign Herta, it may allow Ricciardo to serve the final season on his contract as Herta is contracted with Andretti Autosport for one more year.
