In midst of seeking contract extension, Sergio Perez makes bizarre claim over ‘regression’ at Red Bull

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has made the bold claim that he regressed over the course of the previous season. This comes on the back of his best-ever finish in the drivers’ standings and in the midst of uncertainty over his future contract.

Perez has a deal at Red Bull till the end of the upcoming season, but after failing to win any of the last 18 Grand Prix last term, there is plenty of scrutiny over his position at the Milton Keynes-based outfit.

His teammate Max Verstappen had the most eye-catching time, picking up 19 wins to set a new benchmark in the sport.

With Perez now 33 years old, he still has plenty to offer behind the wheel, but will have to ensure he starts strong, with a number of drivers eyeing his seat.

“I want to be able to achieve regularity, to build momentum,” Perez said.

“I think what we missed this year is progression. We started the year very high, tied with Max, but we were not able to progress throughout the season. We have sometimes even regressed.

“So I think that will be my main priority: to be able to progress throughout the season, whatever my starting point. It is important that, weekend after weekend, we continue to evolve and improve.

“I had a few bad weekends. We started the year very strong in the first five or six races, but then we couldn’t progress with the car. This is something I missed this year and want to massively improve next year.

“The problems we had this year gave me a better understanding of what I was doing with the settings, how I was setting the car up, what direction I should go when I had problems. So this is something that will definitely make us stronger next year.”
