Verstappen points to privilege ‘lucky’ Hamilton has got in his path to seven world championships

Current World Champion Max Verstappen revealed that he needed a “bit of luck” if he is to win multiple world championships.

Verstappen finally accomplished his dream of becoming world champion when he crossed the line to win the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP in December. By doing so, he pipped seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton to the championship after battling him throughout 2021.

With him joining an elite club of members, the next thing would be to do it again and again and how many ever times he can. As the saying goes, the only thing better than being champion is to be able to count how many times you have been one.

However, Verstappen revealed that he needed a “bit of luck” if he is to win multiple world championships, and stated that for him, anything after this one would just be a bonus.

As quoted by GP Fans, when asked in an interview by CarNext what was next for him after winning the championship, the Dutchman replied, “Everything that comes now is just a bonus and I am just going to enjoy it.”

Winning and retaining

“You need a bit of luck to fight for seven or eight (titles),” he continued.

“You need a very dominant team as well to do that so you don’t always have that luck or you are not in that era. Sometimes it doesn’t happen.

“For me, I always wanted to win one and you will see where you go from there. Everything that comes now is a bonus but that doesn’t mean that if I lose a race, I will still be upset, but maybe a few minutes after I will say ‘it’s ok’.”
