Sebastian Vettel sent a warning to Aston Martin, and urged them to stay realistic and grounded heading into 2022.
Vettel left Ferrari and joined Aston Martin at the beginning of 2021. He had a mixed debut season with the team and experienced some dizzying highs and some crushing lows.
The pinnacle came when he romped from P11 to a stunning P2 in Azerbaijan, taking Aston Martin’s first podium in the process. The moment of rock-bottom came at the Hungarian GP, when his incredible drive into P2 was followed by a disqualification.
On the team front, the Silverstone outfit did not do as good. The new season brings with it optimism and excitement, but the four-time world champion wants his team to stay focused.
Vettel sent a warning to Aston Martin asking them to remain focused and realistic for 2022.
When asked by Blick if he has a target for next season, Vettel said, “Yes and no.
“Of course, you can’t give any figures or forecasts yet. I can’t say now that we want to be the fastest team and become World Champion.
“But if you talk to all the teams, most of them hope and believe that they will be at the top. That doesn’t work out. We also have to keep our feet on the ground and remain realistic.”
Optimism
“As I said before, a new set of regulations gives everyone hope,” he said.
“We now have to wait a year and see if everything develops positively – in all regions of the current standings. In short – whether everyone is really moving closer together and whether there will be more overtaking.
“We have a professional relationship. And the team works like that, has been bringing in a lot of staff for months for the new start.
“There is a great atmosphere of departure. I like that, and I also enjoy continuing. New things have always motivated me,” he concluded.
