Mark Webber talked about Lewis Hamilton’s retirement, saying that there is an outside possibility of him thinking about it.
Hamilton suffered massive heartbreak in Abu Dhabi, having lost his eighth world championship on the last lap of the race. It wasn’t his fault at all; in fact, he had actually kept a big gap between himself and his championship rival Max Verstappen.
However, the FIA’s shambolic decision cost him the race and a championship he worked his entire year to win. One can only imagine his mental state when he crossed the line, and it could never have been positive.
Webber talked about a potential Hamilton retirement, and insisted that it was a thought that could have creeped into the mind of the seven-time world champion.
“I still think it will be Mercedes and Red Bull by the way (on top in 2022),” the Australian told Channel 4, as quoted by Planet F1.
“But Hamilton, no question about it, he will be in for a big chance of going again next year. What was interesting though, I remember hearing Roger Federer at the Australian Open one year saying borderline ‘I might see you next year’.
“There was a little bit… Lewis on the end of his quote said ‘we’ll see next year’. So, who knows where his head is right now.”
Paternal love
Hamilton’s father Anthony was the first to console his son after he had been robbed. He hugged him and comforted him with words, and then went to congratulate Max Verstappen and his father for their triumph.
“I think his father obviously would have obviously been words like, the pride, the class, the dignity, ‘Chin up son, I’m proud of what you have done here’ (sic),” the former Red Bull driver said.
Webber also praised for Hamilton for racing hard and clean despite his title being on the line.
“He also had a chance, when Max went past him, he also had a chance to put his little front wing right in that rear tyre,” he said.
