Early life

Alonso was born on July 29, 1981, in Oviedo, Asturias, Northern Spain, to a working-class family. He is the son of José Luis Alonso, a mine shaft explosives factory mechanic and amateur kart driver, and Ana Daz, a department store salesperson. Lorena, Alonso’s elder sister, is a doctor.

From 1985 until 1995, he attended the Holy Guardian Angel Primary School in Oviedo as part of the Basic Education System. Alonso attended the San Lazaro Institute Leopoldo Alas Clarn until his motor racing career forced him to quit during his Curso de Orientación Universitaria in 2000.

He was granted permission to study away from school after disobeying his mother’s orders and failing to attend courses regularly. He was unproblematic and earned a solid academic performance by asking his classmates for notes.

Career

Karting career

Alonso’s father wanted a hobby to share with his children, so he made Lorena a go-kart. She was uninterested in karting, so the kart was given to Alonso, a three-year-old. The pedals on the karts were changed to make them easier to drive, and the local racing federation issued him an obligatory kart racing licence when he was five years old; his father turned down an offer for his son to play goalie for the RC Celta de Vigo football club. The family lacked the funds needed to develop him in karts; they couldn’t afford rain tyres, so Alonso had to adapt to a wet track on slick tyres.

Alonso won his first kart race at the age of seven in Pola de Laviana. He won the Asturias and Galicia children’s junior championships in 1988 and 1989, and he advanced to the Cadet class in 1990.

Formula One

Cesare Fiorio, the sports director, granted Alonso a test in a Formula One vehicle at the Circuito de Jerez in December 1999 as part of Nissan’s organising firm RPM’s agreement to give its series champion a chance to test at a higher level. In 2000, he was a test and reserve driver for Minardi before joining the racing team in 2001.

Alonso’s best result of the season in a non-competitive car was a tenth-place finish at the German Grand Prix, for which he earned no points and finished 23rd overall.

He agreed to become Renault’s test driver for 2002 on the orders of manager Flavio Briatore to become acquainted with the team and better himself for the future.  Alonso collaborated with the engineering department to increase the performance of Giancarlo Fisichella and Jenson Button and tested in Spain and the United Kingdom.

In May 2002, he raced a Jaguar against test drivers André Lotterer and James Courtney at the Silverstone Circuit. In 2003, Alonso was promoted to the Renault race team.

Alonso’s contract with Renault concluded on December 31, 2006, and he was not allowed to leave the team early for sponsorship reasons. In November 2006, Renault permitted Alonso to make his maiden appearance for McLaren in a test session at the Circuito de Jerez.

In 2007, his major rivals were his teammate Lewis Hamilton and Räikkönen at Ferrari. Alonso won four Grand Prix in Malaysia, Monaco, Europe, and Italy and lead the championship until Hamilton passed him. Before the season’s final round, the Brazilian Grand Prix, he had 103 championship points against Räikkönen’s 100 and Hamilton’s 107, and needed to win the race and have his teammate finish third or below to win his third championship.

Ferrari

He agreed to drive for Ferrari in 2009 with Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, but team principal Jean Todt extended the contracts of both Felipe Massa and Räikkönen to 2010.

Alonso signed a deal with Ferrari in mid-2009 to drive from 2011 onwards, but the date was pushed back to 2010 as Renault was probed for race manipulation in Singapore and Räikkönen was fired from the team.

Alonso’s major title rivals were McLaren’s Hamilton and Button, as well as Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. He won five races that season and entered the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix leading by eight points after falling 47 points behind midway through the season due to mistakes. Alonso finished second to Vettel after failing to pass Renault’s Vitaly Petrov due to a strategy blunder by Ferrari.

Return to McLaren

In 2014, Alonso had major disputes with team principal Marco Mattiacci and left Ferrari after contract discussions to stay with the team fell through. He returned to McLaren on a three-year contract with no opt-out provisions from 2015 to 2017.

Alpine

Alonso was signed to drive for Alpine F1 Team alongside Esteban Ocon for the 2021 and 2022 seasons after Renault rebranded the team to Alpine from 2021 onwards. In preparation for his return to Formula One, Alonso drove the Renault R.S.18 for four days and topped the timing charts in the post-2020 season young driver’s test driving the Renault R.S.20 for Renault.

In his debut race with Alpine, he was forced to retire due to plastic debris in his brake duct. He finished P11 in the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. with teammate Ocon slightly ahead in P10, but both were upgraded one position after Kimi Räikkönen was penalised, giving Alonso his first points of the season in his second race back in Formula One.
