The 23-year-old driver’s contract with Williams is set to expire by the end of this year.
Thus, he is rumored to replace current Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.
The young driver knows very well that he will have to overcome several challenges if he wants to sign a successful deal with the Silver Arrows.
He also knows how good Hamilton is behind the wheel and what it would take to match his pace.
Russell knows of Hamilton’s skill
In an interview, Russell mentioned that he is well aware of how skilled of a driver Hamilton really is.
“Absolutely. You know having the opportunity to be teammates with a guy like Lewis would be amazing because, in my opinion, he is the best of the best,” he said.
“There is no argument in that, his stats are definitely the greatest of all time.
“If you want to be the best, going against the best is the only way and I am sure any driver would learn so much from Lewis, with all his experience & the mutual respect he has with many people, “ the Brit concluded.
Future of George Russell
Russell had the opportunity to drive for the Brackley-based squad last year during the Sakhir Grand Prix. This was when he filled in for Lewis Hamilton.
The Williams driver turned heads and forced Mercedes to consider him as a potential for their team.
Now, come 2021, both Russell and Bottas’ contracts are set to expire by the end of this year. This could prove to be an opportunity in disguise for the Brit.
Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, is the only one who has an answer to Russell’s questions regarding the Mercedes seat.
The announcement is expected to come after the Hungarian Grand Prix, followed by the summer break.
What did Wolff say?
”[We are] also happy Valtteri’s racing in Austria in my opinion was really good and he needs to consolidate that. He’s a known factor,” Wolff stated.
“In the same way we know the strengths and weaknesses of George, and that decision is going to be made during the summer.
“First [we will have] discussions with George and Valtteri and then hopefully we are sorted before the end of the season.
“We value them both for their strengths and for what they can contribute to the team, “ Wolff explained.
