George Russell might not be fit for Williams – “Need someone to bring team back to the top”

It is no secret that Williams driver George Russell will be trying to sign up with Mercedes at the earliest possible opportunity.

As a result, his departure will leave a massive hole to fill in at Williams considering he wants to fight for world championships with the Silver Arrows.

With the news of Russell’s departure flooding the media every day, several names are being linked to the Grove-based team.

However, under the leadership of Jost Capito, Williams are clear with their guidelines on who would replace Russell if he decides to move on.

What did Capito say?

“We want to have the best drivers possible, but only drivers who are interested in driving for Williams and who know what is required of this team,” the team boss said.

“A driver who wants to become world champion right away next year will certainly not come to us.

“We need someone who can eventually bring the team back to the top, who can support the team, and who can lead the team.

“At the moment we see that the interest in driving for Williams is increasing again and that is only good for to notice,” Capito concluded.

Future of George Russell?

The 23-year-old driver is currently in the last year of his contract with Williams. He is expected to replace Valtteri Bottas in Mercedes next year.

At the moment, there is only one person who knows the fate of the Brith, Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff.

Wolff said: “We will use the coming races to get more clarity.

“I thought Valtteri’s last race was very strong (Austrian GP), he needs to consolidate that. We also know George’s strengths and weaknesses.

“I expect that we will make a decision during the summer. We will negotiate only with Valtteri and George. It’s between them,” he concluded.
