“Haas is not the biggest team”: Schumacher explains why Ferrari didn’t sign him up for Alfa Romeo

Reigning F2 champion Mick Schumacher is one to watch out for.

The German will make his Formula 1 debut this season, having been signed by Ferrari-backed Haas. Schumacher was asked about his initial thoughts about his new team and the environment. Schumacher couldn’t help but contain his excitement.

“Haas are not the biggest team but they have a very direct line to their drivers. We are in contact very often, which is nice, of course. It’s also good to know and discuss what the team’s goals are. They work very well with their drivers,” he said.

Haas had a rather poor season in 2020. They eventually decides to shake things up by breaking their driver duo of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. Instead, they team wanted to look towards the future and has given a chance to two rookies in Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

Their main task is to outclass Alfa Romeo.

“I also think a breath of fresh air will do the team a lot of good. Hopefully it will motivate them and let us move forward well together. I felt comfortable right away. That sometimes takes longer,” Schumacher said.

“At Haas, it was after the first day, after the first meeting. I’m happy to have been placed there. It’s a good place for me to develop further.”

There were also talks about Schumacher racing for Alfa Romeo this year, but they chose to stick with Antonio Giovinazzi and the veteran Kimi Raikkonen.

“The decision was made together, of course. Ferrari knows the business extremely well. They know exactly what is best for me,” he said.
