“Have already discussed in private”: Wolff reveals Mercedes has begun contract talks with Hamilton

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed that Lewis Hamilton is expected to stay with Mercedes for 2022 and beyond. He also disclosed that discussions for a contract have already begun.

Initially, there were rumours that Hamilton would retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season to coincide with the ending of the current regulations and the start of a new regulation cycle.

Wolff was keen not to repeat its mistakes from last season as far as contract negotiations are concerned. The Austrian said that the team was on its game this time around and preliminary talks are already underway.

He went on to say that he does not see any reason for Hamilton to turn his back on Mercedes and look for a drive elsewhere.

“There is no reason why not,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

“It’s the best place to be and he’s been with us for a long time.

“I think, as long as we can provide the outlook for a competitive package, I see no reason why we shouldn’t be together and continue the marriage.

“So yeah, came out in public what we have already discussed in private, and I’m happy about it.”

Just last week, while testing out the 18-inch Pirellis in Imola, Hamilton let slip that he wishes to continue in the sport. We can only wait and see how the contract pans out.
