Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road cycling accident according to his team Alpine. He is believed to be “conscious and well in himself”. The Spaniard is set to undergo further medical examinations on Friday.
Fernando Alonso is currently preparing for a return to the sport after spending two seasons out. He was riding his road bike in Switzerland when he had the accident, after which he was taken to hospital.
Alpine wrote a statement after the collision. “Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.
“Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning.”
The team confirmed that further details would be made public on Friday following the tests.
This comes as worrying news for the Alpine squad. The team is in the process of preparing for testing at Bahrain in just over a month’s time.
Importantly for Alonso, this season will see him feature in his first race since the 2018 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
