Canadian driver Lance Stroll has taken a dig at Lewis Hamilton, claiming that his success has more to do with his Mercedes car than his skill as a driver.
Hamilton is a seven-time world champion, of which six titles have come for him at Mercedes.
The British driver moved to Mercedes in 2013 and has won the world championship on six out of seven occasions since making the switch. The only time he did not win was when Nico Rosberg pipped him in 2016.
It has led Stroll to believe that it is Hamilton’s car that is the primary reason for his success.
“As a world champion, I respect Hamilton, but if you put Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren, he won’t win the race and he’s one of the best drivers on the grid. If he had a Williams, he wouldn’t have won the race,” Stroll said.
“It’s the nature of the sport. While the pilot is in the vehicle, it can make a difference of two or three positions, but cannot climb over the other teams by a second or a half. Maybe the teams will catch up faster than expected.”
With the gap closing between Mercedes and other teams this season, Hamilton might be pushed for the title.
Hamilton will be focused, however, given the fact that a triumph this season will bring him to a record-breaking eight titles. He is currently tied on seven with the legendary German driver Michael Schumacher.
