Lewis Hamilton recently signed a one-year contract extension at Mercedes following a lot of speculation around his future.
Many have suggested that it was always bound to happen, given the fact that he is one F1 world championship away from overtaking Michael Schumacher as the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time.
However, even if the Mercedes driver does end up being crowned world champion, he may not quit the sport.
It has been speculated that his diverse interests, especially in the entertainment industry, are reason enough for him to call time on what has been a phenomenal driving career.
A driving force for Hamilton’s continued interest beyond the current season is the fact that changes in rules for the 2022 season will end up making the grid more competitive.
It is natural for any competitor to be keen to prove themselves when the public doesn’t believe they have a distinct advantage over others.
It is no secret that Mercedes has been the fastest and most reliable team in recent years, and this has often cast a shadow on Hamilton’s records.
“In the current position, I don’t feel like this is the end. Of course, we’ve got these changes that are happening next year which are exciting,” Hamilton said.
“I think this looks like it could be the most exciting season yet. We’ve got new teams, we’ve got new formats, and it’s closer. I don’t feel like I’m at the end.
“So, only in the next 8 months or so will let me know. I’ll find out whether I’m ready to stop or not. I don’t think I will personally, but you never know.”
Hamilton reassured his fans that he is more than committed towards the sport.
”I’m fully invested in this season and in delivering. I still love what I do.
“I’m generally in a fortunate position that I don’t have to commit to multiple years.
“I chose to have a one-year deal, so then I could see how the year goes, and where we’re at mid-year, or towards the end of the year.
“Who knows whether we’ll still be in a pandemic? But it doesn’t mean I’m not committed.
“I’m still very, very committed to the sport.”
Do you think that Hamilton will have it all his own way this season as well? Or will Red Bull driver Max Verstappen put a halt to his charge?
