“It hurts as a driver”: Perez reckons it’s too early to deem him second fiddle in championship battle

Sergio Perez’s weekend in Imola did not exactly go the way he hoped for. Even though he showed great speed during qualifying, things did not quite work out all that well for him during the race and he ended up finishing outside points. He blames himself for that.

“On Sunday almost everyone made a mistake, but my mistake was more costly,” he was quoted as saying at a press conference ahead of the Portugal GP.

“That was a great opportunity that we missed. It hurts as a driver because you know how hard the team works. But you have to move on.”

Red Bull Racing could have managed to pick up a one-two in Imola. However, Mercedes retained the lead during both championships. But, Verstappen is just one point behind Hamilton in the drivers’ standings.

The Dutchman is currently the only challenger to the Brit. However, Perez thinks that it is too early for him to be called the second driver at Red Bull.

“I’ve been around long enough to know that it’s not about how you start, but where you finish,” said the Mexican.
