Mercedes had a tough time during the practice session on Thursday. Lewis Hamilton managed to score a disappointing P3 after the two free practice sessions.
Ferrari managed to surprise us all by coming in the first place. Andrew Shovlin, however, has Max Verstappen in his sight.
Every year, the Monaco GP weekend starts early on Thursday and this is a good thing for both Mercedes and Red Bull. This is considering Ferrari’s performance till now in Monaco.
The Silver Arrows managed to finish third and fifth after an even more discouraging first practice session.
What did Shovlin say?
“This season we’ve learnt to expect Max’s company in the battle at the front but it was a surprise to us to see both Ferraris looking so strong.
“You don’t need to scrutinize the timesheets for long to see that their pace is genuine – they could be real contenders for the win,” Shovlin mentioned in a press release by Mercedes.
“We’ve got an extra day to work on things tomorrow which is handy as it feels like we need to improve both our single lap and long-run performance.
“But Monaco is all about putting together the entire weekend and today was a pretty decent start,” concluded the Mercedes engineer.
