James Pattinson is an Australian cricketer. He plays as a bowler and is regarded for his aggressiveness and direct style for play. He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler, and a left-handed batsman.
The 31-year-old has played a lot of domestic and international cricket. He has played more than 400 Tests, 180 ODIs and 50 T20Is. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 2021.
James Pattinson early life and career
Pattinson was born James Lee Pattinson on 3 May, 1990. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, to English parents. His birthgivers moved to Australia from England before he was born, and that’s how he ended up playing for the Aussies.
He began his bat-and-ball career in domestic cricket, playing the one-day format of the same. Huge flashes of potential stood out as Pattinson impressed one and all in a match against New South Wales. His 6-48 was the best figure by a player from Victoria in the history of the format, breaking the 40-year record held by Graeme Watson.
His performances drew the attention of the Australian selectors, who signed him up for the national team in 2011. They thought highly of him and picked him for a Sri Lankan Test tour when he had six top-flight matches under his belt. He didn’t play there, but what would follow was simply spectacular.
Pattinson made his Test debut against New Zealand at the end of 2011. He took a staggering five wickets while giving away only 27 runs. He picked up 14 wickets across the two Tests he played, sending out a statement of intent.
The promising player was named in the squad for a Bangladesh tour. He made his debut in the final game of the series and came away with a wicket. It started off so bright, but it wouldn’t be the same in a while as injuries started to pile on and damage his career.
In the next five years, he would only play 17 Test matches. He suffered multiple stress fractures on his lower back, and his career was on the line. It got so bad that he had to opt for lower spine surgery in 2017, the same kind New Zealand cricketer Shane Bond got done to try and prolong his playing career.
He made his return a year later, and had a great season for Victoria in domestic cricket. The 2019 Ashes squad was put out, and Pattinson was included in it.
The bowler had a very brief IPL career. He was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013, but failed to play a single game due to medical issues. Seven years later, Mumbai Indians took a chance on him, and he repaid their faith with great performances, eventually becoming first-choice for the team.
Pattinson has played more than 150 matches in all formats of the game. In addition to having good bowling figures including 470 wickets, he has scored 2300+ runs. He has scored six fifties, and his best score is an unbeaten 89.
In domestic cricket, he has played for many teams. He played two spells for Melbourne Renegades, first from 2013-14, and then from 2016-17. In 2018, he joined Brisbane Heat, and played for them till 2020. He is most famous for his time with Nottinghamshire, having played there from 2017 till the present.

Pattinson’s elder brother Darren Pattinson is a cricketer as well. He has even played a Test for England in 2008. The reason he played for England was because he was born there, with his birth taking place before the family moved to Australia.
Pattinson used to train regularly with Darren in the backyard of their house at Melbourne. His brother has two passports, and has dabbled in Australian cricket on a county level. He played for Nottinghamshire, honing his craft there for five seasons.
