Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kings XI Punjab will be called Punjab Kings starting from the upcoming campaign. This is the first time the franchise will be renamed.
KXIP is one of eight teams that participated in last season’s IPL which was held in UAE.
“The team was planning to change the name for a long time. The owners thought it should be done before this IPL. So it is not a sudden decision,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Kings XI Punjab, which is owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul, is yet to lift the IPL trophy. It has finished runners up on one occasion.
Thursday will see the commencement of a player auction, with the IPL set to start in the second week of April.
