Michael Buffer is a boxing announcer and entrepreneur from the United States. Buffer rose to fame when he created his signature catchphrase, “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble,” which is used to open all major boxing events.

He registered the phrase as a trademark. Over the years, Michael has earned hundreds of millions of dollars in royalties from his trademark.

Early life

Michael Buffer was born on November 2, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. At the time of his birth, his father was serving in the United States Navy during World War II.

Buffer joined the US Army during the Vietnam War and served from the ages of 20 to 23. Following his military service, he worked as a car salesman, model, and actor.

Career

In 1982, he began working as a ring announcer, and by 1983, he was announcing all boxing matches on ESPN. It has brought him fame and fortune, especially since Michael shrewdly trademarked his signature catchphrase, the aforementioned “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!” in 1984.

Buffer was the sole ring announcer for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) main events featuring Hulk Hogan and other megastars until 2001.

The WCW is no longer in business, but Buffer continues to serve as the lead announcer for Time Warner’s pay-per-view matches. Several matches from promoter Top Rank are broadcast on HBO. Previously, his exclusive contract prohibited him from announcing for the UFC, but after WCW folded, he was able to announce in other wrestling promotions.

Buffer has announced for the occasional MLB World Series, Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, Volunteer 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, and NFL playoff games, in addition to wrestling and boxing.

Earnings

Michael’s long-lost half brother, future UFC announcer Bruce Buffer, suggested he register a trademark. Because Michael owns the trademark, anyone who wants to use the phrase must pay Michael. He has licensed the phrase for use in songs, video games, movies, TV shows, and a variety of merchandise since 1992.

One of the most well-known licensing agreements involved the video game “Ready to Rumble.” Following the game’s success, Midway reportedly paid Buffer $100 million to license his phrase in perpetuity.
