Michael Skinner is a former stock car racing driver from the United States. He’s raced in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the NASCAR Busch Series, and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

He is the father of Jamie Skinner and Dustin Skinner, both former NASCAR drivers. He has a net worth of approximately $3.5 million as of 2021.

Early life

He was born on 28 June 1957 in Susanville, California. Skinner began racing in a Plymouth Road Runner at Susanville Speedway in the 1970s and went on to win three championships at various California dirt tracks. He quickly relocated to North Carolina, where he worked as a crew member for Rusty Wallace and Petty Enterprises.

He made his NASCAR debut in the Winston Cup Series in 1986, driving the No. 19 Pontiac for the Zanworth Racing Team, finishing 22nd in three starts. He made his Busch Series debut the following year at Darlington Raceway, finishing 27th in the No. 0 Hunt Tire-sponsored Oldsmobile.

Richard Childress Racing chose Skinner to drive the No. 3 GM Goodwrench-sponsored Chevrolet Silverado in the inaugural NASCAR SuperTruck Series season. He won the first race in the series and went on to win the first championship with 8 wins, 17 top 5 finishes, 18 top 10 finishes, 10 poles, an average start of 3.9 and an average finish of 4.8.

Skinner was promoted to full-time driver in the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup season, driving the No. 31 with a Lowe’s sponsorship. He won poles in both races at Daytona International Speedway this season and finished in the top ten three times. Despite failing to qualify for one race and finishing 30th in points, he was named Rookie of the Year.

Skinner won one race and earned four poles in 2008, finishing sixth in Truck Series points. He also competed in 11 Sprint Cup races for Toyota, as well as one for Bill Davis Racing, three for Michael Waltrip Racing, and seven for Team Red Bull.

Skinner appeared as a test driver in the first series of the British motoring show The Grand Tour in 2016. Skinner announced on November 7, 2017, that he would not be returning for the show’s second season.

Personal life

Skinner was married twice, the first time to his high school sweetheart, who he married as an ultimatum but later divorced. Then, in 2000, he married current Angie Skinner, who is also a SiriusXM Speedway co-host on occasion.
