“My hips are sometimes the limiting factor”: Ricciardo on initially failing to fit into new MCL35M

New McLaren recruit Daniel Ricciardo has admitted that his broad structure doesn’t always work well for him when it comes to car design.

The Australian said that his hips are wide and this often leads to a problem for designer while customising the cockpit for him.

Ricciardo confirmed that he encountered this problem at McLaren as well while fitting into the new MCL35M.

“I do have wide hips – I guess. I’m pretty thick boned,” said Ricciardo.

“But I got in, so it was the first mock-up of the seat.”

“And with the dimensions that they had, they assumed what would be okay for me. But it wasn’t quite okay.

“Fortunately, it was just the seat, and it wasn’t the actual keel itself that is too narrow.

“Since then, I have been able to get in a seat, and I do fit,” he said.

Ricciardo agreed that his size is probably the limit as far as design is concerned as there is huge emphasis on everything being as compact as possible.

“I feel like I’m certainly the limit,” he said.

“I think the way they design the cars and the chassis now, everything’s trying to be as tight and compact as possible.

“Really, my hips are sometimes the limiting factor.

“So, I tell them, ‘just make sure I’m comfortable, and if you think that loses you a tenth of aerodynamics, then I’ll just drive faster on track!”
