Nigel Mansell holds the distinction of being the first driver to hold both a CART and an F1 championship at the same time. Mansell was Britain’s favourite during the period of Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, and others. He made his Formula One debut in 1980 with Lotus.
Until 1983, the Brit had secured four podium finishes for the team. He joined Williams the next year and raced with them for four years. During his time with them, he won his first race, the European Grand Prix at Brands Hatch.
Achievements
He won 13 races for Williams. In 1986 and 1987, he finished second. After that, he joined Ferrari. Mansell became the final Ferrari driver to be personally selected by Enzo Ferrari before his death in August 1988, in preparation for the 1989 season, an honour Mansell described as “one of the greatest in my entire career.” Mansell even received a 1989 Ferrari F40 as a gift from Enzo Ferrari.
He elected to return to Williams, this time with Renault engines rather than Honda. He finally won the championship in his second season in 1992. Mansell won his final race of the season in the Australian Grand Prix in 1994.
