Esteban Ocon sent a warning to Mercedes and Red Bull, saying that Alpine might just show up alongside them on the grid in 2022.
Alpine were one of the few teams who maintained consistency and achieved good results despite shifting resources towards 2022 early. A podium came at the Qatar GP, and even an absolutely staggering win at the Hungarian GP.
The team performed quite admirably and snatched P5 in the Constructors’ Championship from rivals AlphaTauri. The French team now wants to do one better, and the local driver finds himself in that project.
Ocon sent a warning to Mercedes and Red Bull, declaring Alpine’s intent to aim for the top.
“I think (the team have made) huge progress,” he told Racingnews365.com.
“Everything we did inside (the team), operationally, taking strategy decisions, looking after the tyres, looking after the car itself, and getting the maximum out of it.
“I think it’s been huge progress, and I’m very pleased that we’ve done that this year. Of course, we got two podiums, almost three, this season for the team, with a car that didn’t perform as good as last year. I think we had not as good of a package.
“But we’ve still managed to overcome these issues, get on top of it, and still score very decent results.”
With much to get excited about regarding the former Renault team, their 2022 looks bright. Ocon also suggested that El Plan was in full force, and that they would be doing their best to trouble the usual frontrunner suspects.
“We want to keep going,” the former Force India driver explained.
“And, as I said, once we are going to have the pace, I think we’re going to be quite dangerous.”
