Dana White has confirmed that the UFC is working to finalize a Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington match for the next welterweight title fight. Usman recently defeated Jorge Masdival at UFC 261. Usman has earlier stated his intention to defend his title atleast two more times in 2021.
In a recent interview, White revealed that he was going to meet Usman to talk about his plans. White, however, did not confirm the scrap or any potential timeline for the rematch.
Dana White said, “I have dinner with Usman tonight… I don’t know what has he got on his mind or whatever. He wanted to get together and talk… Usman vs Covington is one of the greatest fights I’ve ever seen in my life. It is an incredible fight.”
White also revealed that he had put Covington’s name in the mix in the lead-up to UFC 261 and announced him as the next challenger to the title if Usman defeated Masdival.
Timelines since last fight
Usman and Covington last faced each other back in 2019. Usman won the fight via fifth-round TKO to retain his title.
Since then, Usman has defeated Jorge Masdival and Gilbert Burns while Covington defeated former champion Tyron Woodley in September 2020.
Colby Covington has proved to be a difficult opponent for Usman. The Nigerian Nightmare has won every other UFC fight quite comfortably. Usman currently holds a 14-0 record in UFC, while Covington has won 11 and lost 2.
If this fight gets finalised, it will be quite a barn-burner. Covington poses a serious threat to Usman. It will be quite entertaining to see both the stalwarts try to take each other down.
